#privacy and #security #question:
How to protect a mastodon profile against #datamining ?

What can I do as a user?
What can I do as an instance admin?

My data isn't owned anymore by BigTech but can be currently easily exploited by companies like Cambridge Analytical.

I appreciate all inputs and ideas!
Thank you

RustDesk is awesooooome! :rust: rustdesk.com

Currently using its direct IP feature, to connect my work laptop to my desktop computer. Really responsive on LAN, and easy to setup as no relays are needed.

Do you want to create draft messages in Mastodon that you can send later?

There's no official feature for this, but if you're using the website or certain Mastodon apps you can do it unofficially:

1. Write your draft message but don't post it yet. Also don't @ anyone in it yet.

2. Set the visibility to "mentioned people only" or "direct"

3. Post it, click on "..." and bookmark it

You'll then be able to treat your bookmarks folder as a drafts folder. Only you can see these drafts because they are visible to "mentioned people only" and you didn't @ anyone.

When you want to actually post a draft:

4. Click "..." on the post and select "delete & re-draft"

5. Finish writing the message and feel free to @ whomever you want

6. Set the visibility to public (or whatever you want it to be), and post the message

Does this remind you of a popular UNIX/Linux command?

#QED Text Editor can be considered the origin of the famous #grep tool. You can read a manual from the 70's on this link:
bell-labs.com/usr/dmr/www/qedm

You can also read more old UNIX guides in Dennis Ritchie's Bell Labs page:
bell-labs.com/usr/dmr/www/

or in archive.org/details/bitsavers? (you can also search from archive.org/ homepage)

I added most relevant guides and articles on my page: rs1.es/linux-websites.html#old

@vkc
I like it so much, I even wrote an add-on / #extension for #Firefox that allows me to right click any link and try to open it in #MPV. MPV uses yt-dlp in the background, so any website that supports, MPV also does: twitch, streamable, vimeo, peertube, ...

addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firef

The add-on is generic and allows passing any link to a command, so for example sometimes, when a webpage doesn't look great in Firefox, I right click and open it in chromium or brave.

You Can't Control Your Data in the Cloud

Nice article, preaching this since years but someone finally wrote a detailed explanation why exactly you lose control.

I think we badly need *real* privacy for the masses. Whatsapp, Telegram, Element/Matrix, Protonmail, Tutanota and others declare they're giving it, and huge lots of people believe them, but it's currently just *not* real: bu.noblogs.org/end-to-end-encr
For example, it’s just not true that «Due to the encryption utilized, Proton Mail is unable to hand over the contents of encrypted emails under any circumstances», in spite of what this Wikipedia page, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ProtonMa, currently wrongly report.

Fediblock recommend! Important!

I know I posted this before but I'm gonna do it again to make sure it reaches as wide as possible..

The following domain: "d-fens.systems" went live a little while back and when checking out the instance it has 2 accounts. The admin(that follows known racists in the Fedi) and a 'FollowBot' that automatically follows as much accounts as possible.

Why would this be an issue you say?

Well! A while ago some bad actors made via the exact same way a follow bot that added people into "groups" that they thinked we belonged in like: "gay, lefist, activist, trans" etc etc!

These lists can only be used for targeting people online and we DO NOT WANT THIS in any way!

I again, I urge #Fediverse admins to domain block "d-fens.systems" ASAP.

#FediBlock
